South Carolina Farmers:   No Longer Forgotten

In an article, written by Doug Pardue, in April 2013, South Carolina's farmers are expected to make a notable contribution to the economic condition of the state.  It is estimated that rural farmers will double the economy and decrease the unemployment rate by adding 10,000 new jobs.  Farmers are partnering with local restaurants in an effort to provide healthy food choices.

Restaurants are making notable changes in their menus to address obesity issues.  According to USAToday.com, the south has a larger percentage of people, who are obese.  In South Carolina, it is estimated that 30.9 percent of its population is obese.  Recognizing this concern, many farmers are participating in the farm-to-table partnerships, and are growing organic fruits and vegetable as a way to encourage and increase healthy diets.  Farmers identify what vegetables chef need and they grow and rotate crops in demand.

South Carolina's "Buy South Carolina.  Nothings Finer.", as well as other marketing tools, encourages SC residents to patronize all SC business.  The Fresh on the Menu App, "Its A Matter of Taste", helps you locate restaurants and recipes that include fresh foods from South Carolina.  The participants listed in the App are committed to using fresh ingredients in their dishes.

In addition, eligible SC residents can redeem vouchers at participating farms, to purchase fruits and vegetables, in accordance with the fruit and vegetable prescription program, a program where doctors counsel and write prescriptions for fruit and vegetable, for people who are over weight.
